1.5 tesla superconductive MRI system “ECHELON Smart ZeroHelium” <Good Design Gold Award>
ECHELON Smart ZeroHelium, a 1.5 tesla superconductive MRI system achieves complete zero liquid helium usage by adopting a magnet structure that efficiently propagates the ultra-low temperature produced by the refrigerator and cools the magnet. This contributes to stable operation even if liquid helium becomes difficult to obtain. In addition, it eliminates the risk of an explosive helium release in the event of a superconducting failure. By removing the need for a quench pipe, has been eliminated, the system offers greater installation flexibility, making it suitable for locationgs with size constraints, such as rooms with low ceilings or high-rise buildings where quench pipes cannot be installed.
Judging Committee Evaluation Comments
In the field of MRI diagnostic technology, which is essential to modern medicine, the development of equipment that does not use helium was highly evaluated for both its approach and technological innovation. Considering the limited helium resources on Earth and the lack of domestic production, the significance of this development is even more pronounced. The high technological capabilities enabling the achievement of ultra-low temperature without using liquid helium will set a foundation for various future technological innovations, and is expected to invigorate new industry. In addition, the adoption of this new technology has not only made it possible to achieve zero liquid helium, but also to solve various issues, such as the benefits of not needing a quench pipe and the safety made possible by the new magnetic control method.
